THE THIRD GARDEN
The Cancer Reception Centre in Roskilde is one of seven centers throughout Denmark. The center offers counseling for cancer patients and relatives both during and after their disease. The building program had very specific requirements for connections and expressions that may seem almost contradictory, and was therefore a very complex assignment to solve:
- Open and inviting building expressions versus a withdrawn protective stay.
- Separated versus coherent spaces.
- Significant but quietly adapted to the surroundings
- Homely atmosphere contra an efficient workflow.
- Facilities for both the young and old.
We have created a building where the qualities emerge from the tension between these opposites. A third place where intimate and homely atmosphere invites visitors to take part in social activities, a third place that offers space for both solitary contemplation, conversations in private or interaction in larger groups.
The heart of the cancer center and associated common facilities are directly connected to all other functions in the house. It rotates around a fully heated interior courtyard, which throughout the year can be opened and operate as a green extension of the common zones.
The third garden is one of many sense gardens attached to the building, and create along with the surrounding gardens a sense of being in close connection with nature, whether you stay in the lounge, the kitchen or the niches located throughout the cancer center.

Modern hospital designs attempt to integrate functionalism, effectiveness and an 18th century idealistic vision of the hospital. Tight budgets and staff shortages make it a difficult task. Centralization of psychiatry is from an efficiency point of view obvious but might be in direct conflict with de-institutionalizing the patient experience. We want a project which insists on bringing together the need for efficiency with a personal and de-institutionalized experience. We have tried to design a complex, consisting of small co-housing in which many of the daily activities can take place. An architecture with niches and scale differences, so all daily activity can be adapted to individual wishes and needs. The shared housing is surrounded by varied outdoor spaces with a wide range of offers, ranging from the cultivation of vegetables and intimate experiences as football and petanque. Meanwhile the building is not compromised with minimum distance and efficient workflow.

"Historically Holmbladsgade is a distincted working-class and industrial area with a unique character. The area has been characterized by a cityscape clearly defined by dense residential streets. Meanwhile, factory buildings and warehouses have interrupted the street line through their varying heights, facades and positioning, which often have been set back. The visual connections with the factory courtyards have a depth and a character which provide a unique identity for the area. In the meeting between industrial and residential buildings, the gable-motive appears as an obvious characteristic in this part of Copenhagen.

Our intention has been to create a project that plays with these historical references. We have designed a building which despite a tight outer appearance, opens up so pedestrians can get an insight into the courtyard. A building on which the roof acts as an important motive to help strengthen the identity of the neighborhood.

Notodden Book &#38; Blues House is a café, a concert place, a culture school, a sounds studio, a movie theatre, a museum and a library, all gathered under one roof.

Notodden is a town 1,5 hours southwest of Oslo, with 10,000 inhabitants. Every year, in august, the town becomes the scene for the largest blues festival in Europe, attracting over 30,000 people from all over the world.

The geometry of the house is generated by the wish of creating the Blue Scene. By wrapping the building in an L-shape around the old dock, we incorporate the industrial history of the site as a visual core in our project. The dock becomes an active part of the cultural experience of the house. In order to create concerts with visual experience, we suggest a site plan that creates the outlines for optimal concert events, large as small, interior as exterior.

The program of the house is laid out so that the open functions are facing the water and the rooms requiring closed walls form an L-shaped frame on the northern side of the building.

<description>How we work with development processes. As a young competition studio with a lot of young and foreign employees, it is essential to follow a rigorous template for the development of a project. While seeming robust and quite simple, our template always allows for flexibility in each project in order to accommodate new parameters.
With circumstances such as tightening budgets, rising parameters and increased inclusion, our everyday challenge is to create visionary and creative architecture.

The poster “How to design a church in 5 weeks” describes our development phase.

WE works with optional development processes, where every suggestion and idea takes part in developing and concretizing the final proposal. Through the many ideas, the discussion on defining the essence and qualities of the project is clarified.

<description>WE architecture is a young innovating architecture office, based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Our capability spans from architecture, urban strategies, tangible design and utopian ideas.

WE architecture was founded in 2009 by Marc Jay and Julie Schmidt-Nielsen. The name WE architecture is based on the philosophy that architecture is not the result of one person's stroke of genius.

WE believe that the best results occur through teamwork and transdisciplinary networks. That is why WE architecture work across continents as well as across professional borders to enter complex conditions with the best insight and precision.

WE create proposals, that merge through creative translation of all the information we get from contexts, conditions and programs.

WE architecture strives to push innovative architecture forward to improve the condition of the world. No less.
