Merging the existing kindergarten of Pilehytten and the school, this project aims to create a holistic framework for children to grow and evolve through the different phases of their developmental learning.
The design scheme centers around unifying the existing fragmented school buildings with a new central extension, a bridge between buildings and educational achievements.
The extension is subtle in its geometry and fits in delicately between the existing buildings, working as the heart and communal space of the new school. A new central common area and kitchen create a purposeful the link between the two schools.
The project was DGNB gold-certified based on the 2020 manual. Recycling was a major focus of the project reusing building materials from a nearby building that was to be demolished in the process.
The recycled building materials are used to create simulating architectural features that encourage diverse play and learning situations and together create a modern, high-quality kids’ house. For example, recycled bricks, with various settings, offsets and integrated niches, add a playful three-dimensionality to the façade with the ambition of creating spatial experiences that stimulate the motor skills of the children and encourage creative thinking. The façade is open to be used in any number of ways; as a prop in children's playtime or a place of rest and retreat for children and parents alike. Recycled windows are also used to create interior visual connections between spaces and crushed roof tiles are mixed with the concrete to add texture to the interior flooring solution.
