A-House was originally designed in 1960 by Thorvald Dreyer as an office hotel and has undergone numerous transformations throughout the years. Through its functional history and appearance, the now residential building is seen as a landmark for the harbourfront area, Islands Brygge.
Seen from the apartments above, the garden has the appearance of an abstract painting underlining the geometry of the building. We designed the courtyard depicting the letter "A" and continued its story through the organisational layout and choice of materials.
The project is divided into 3 zones; A public zone along the west façade which is being used by restaurants, an eastern zone meeting the needs of the private residents and finally the multipurpose garden in the center of the courtyard dividing the public and private both visually and functionally.
The public and the private zones are organised with hard paving and flexible furnishing allowing the users to utilise the space after their specific needs and general maintenance to pass. The multipurpose zone has a park-like character with soft hills and vegetation that create various zones with differing intimacy. Small pockets in the multipurpose park allow for lounge areas for the restaurants and intimate outdoor dining for the residents.
