Gellerup, one of Denmark’s most socially challenged urban areas, is undergoing a significant transformation to integrate its mono-functional, modernistic housing blocks into the surrounding urban and recreational environment. The area, previously characterised by large, empty outdoor spaces, will be revitalised through a densification strategy based on nine guiding principles. These principles aim to create human-scale outdoor spaces, improve accessibility, and establish new infrastructure like pedestrian streets, bike lanes, and diverse building typologies.
The transformation introduces varied housing types—terrace houses, townhouses, apartments, and duplexes—to cater to families, singles, and seniors. The design includes a sport and culture campus with public functions like a library, community center, daycare, and youth housing, creating a vibrant social hub. The nearby city park will be integrated into the neighborhood, connecting green spaces and paths to improve the quality of life.
An "acupuncture strategy" will selectively remove parts of existing buildings to create more appealing and functional spaces, while enhancing connections and maintaining a sense of community. New urban spaces, including fitness areas, communal gardens, cafés, and pedestrian streets, will foster social engagement. More private and retracted backyards in close connection to the residences, with features like outdoor kitchens and playgrounds, nurture communities across apartments.
This diverse mix of housing, public spaces, and green areas will make Gellerup a vibrant, dynamic neighborhood, offering both privacy and opportunities for community engagement, all while remaining closely connected to the rest of Aarhus.
